Effective July 1, 2018, certain volunteers are required to complete U.S. Figure Skating SafeSport Training and background checks.
What does this mean to you?
If you are a locker room volunteer or a volunteer that will come in close contact with skaters, you will need to take the SafeSport Training & background check.
How do you do this?
I have attached a document with more information about the SafeSport training. I have also attached a document that will walk you through the background check process. There is a separate process for members and non-members, so everyone should be able to ensure compliance with this requirement.
Q: I have a background check from another organization (i.e. area school, hockey, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts). Can I use it to comply with U.S. Figure Skating SafeSport requirements?
A: Yes, but only if the background check was completed by NCSI. This is because of the criteria set by the U.S. Olympic Committee (which now has a Center for SafeSport). If the background check wasn’t completed by NCSI, we can’t use it. I promise, I have asked! If it was completed by NCSI, Please send your documentation to memberservices@
Q: I had to complete SafeSport training for USA Hockey. Can I just use that?
A: Yes! If you have taken the SafeSport training through USA Hockey, you may submit that and we will add it to your profile. Please send your documentation to memberservices@
Q: There is a $20 charge for the background check. Who pays for that?
A: The FWISC will reimburse members for this amount. If you are not a member, this will be your responsibility. This would be a great time to check out our family membership option!
Thank you all for your time! Your volunteer work is very much appreciated, and we will really need you at our upcoming events this year! In order to ensure our club compliance, I would appreciate if you would complete your background checks and SafeSport training by the end of June.
In addition to the development of our skaters and the enjoyment of the sport, the FWISC is committed to creating a safe and positive environment for members’ physical, emotional and social development and ensuring that it promotes an environment free of misconduct. FWISC adheres to the U.S. Figure Skating SafeSport Program as a means to help protect its participants from physical abuse, sexual abuse and misconduct, and other types of misconduct including emotional abuse, bullying, threats, harassment, and hazing.
If you have any questions, please contact the FWISC SafeSport Coordinator, Tess Gilbert at firstname.lastname@example.org; 260-233-1654.
